You may rarely think about your septic tank until problems occur. Proper care of your septic tank through preventative maintenance and making smart decisions inside your home can prevent septic disasters.
How frequently you need to have your septic tank pumped will depend on the size of your tank and its amount of use. Larger tanks do not need to be pumped as frequently, but the frequency is increased with the number of people inside your home. A small septic tank with many people inside the home may need to be pumped more than once per year.
Grease and oil are big problems when it comes to your septic tank. Before washing any dishes and cookware, allow residual grease and oil to cool and wipe it away for disposal in the trash. The kitchen is not the only place where oil can cause problems. Your hair, bath and body products often contain oil. It may be unavoidable to use hair and body products with oil, but use them responsibly. Stay away from bath oils, which can add a significant amount of oil to your septic tank in a single bath.
The average use of household cleaners should not pose a significant problem for your septic tank. One cleaning product that can cause problems is the use of chemicals to unclog your drains. When possible, use a drain snake or plunger to remove clogs. For stubborn clogs, you are better off calling in a professional than using chemicals that might damage your septic tank.
Your septic tank will thank you for tossing solid items or old bottles of chemicals in the trash. Make sure your read the instructions on bottles to determine if they can be disposed of properly in the trash or down the drain. Whenever you are unsure of the proper way to dispose of an item, pouring it down the drain or flushing down the toilet is likely to cause more problems.
