Electric Water Heater Troubleshooting New Cumberland, PA

At Ready & Able Plumbing, we know an electric water heater is one of the most important devices in your home. When it breaks or isn’t working as well as it should, it can be frustrating and cause some temporary discomfort. While most heaters only have a lifespan of around 13 years, regular maintenance can go a long way toward preserving the longevity of the device. Although we are always happy to help, there are some electric water heater troubleshooting steps that you can take on your own.

Precautions

Before you begin any do-it-yourself electric water heater troubleshooting, be sure to take the proper safety precautions. Turn off the power to the heater. You can do this by shutting off the circuit breaker or fuse that connects to the heater.

No Hot Water

No hot water is the most obvious sign that your water heater needs to be repaired. This can happen for a few different reasons. There may be a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. You can address this by resetting the circuit breaker or replacing any blown fuses. There may also be a problem with the thermostat or upper heating element. If you do have power going to the heater, you may need to replace the thermostat or other heating elements.

Inconsistent Hot Water

If the hot water comes and goes or doesn’t reach the desired temperature, there may be different factors at work. You may have crossed cold and hot water connections or other plumbing problems. It could also be because of a defective upper heating element or issue with the thermostat. To check for a crossed connection, turn off the water supply to the heater. Then turn on a hot water faucet somewhere else in your home. If water comes out, there is a crossed connection. To check for faulty thermostats and other heating elements, check to make sure the device is receiving power. If not, try resetting the power. If so, you may need maintenance or repairs.
